Saratoga
Lake Watershed Advisory Committee
Meeting Minutes
7:00
PM, Thursday, June 1, 2000
Saratoga County Cooperative Extension Auditorium, Building 5, Ballston
Spa, New York
The
first meeting of the Saratoga Lake Advisory Committee addressing the Saratoga
Lake Watershed Protection and Management Plan.
Briefly, the Advisory
Committee Meeting ran as follows;
- Project Introduction
- Lynnwood Taylor, SLPID. The Saratoga Lake Protection and Improvement
District (SLPID) will be updating the 1983 assessment of the watershed
through a grant they recently received. When considering the health
of Saratoga Lake, the health of the entire watershed must be considered.
- Project Scope
- Dean Long, LA Group. The project has basically three objectives. The
first is the inventory and analysis of present conditions in the watershed
which will then be compared with the results of the 1983 study. Second,
since there are already standards and regulations in place in most of
the watershed communities, the goal is to improve the practice of watershed
management. This will be stressed through public outreach including
the use of newsletters, committee meetings, planning board meetings,
and a web site. Finally, a long-term management plan will be developed
for the control of Eurasian watermilfoil, Zebra Mussels and many other
lake water quality issues.
- Historic Perspective
- George Hodgson, Saratoga County Environmental Management Services.
A slide show of lake history, focusing on the 1970’s, and current uses
of the lake and surrounding waterways, illustrated the importance of
a healthy water system.
- Advisory Committee
Introductions – Tracey Clothier, LA Group. Introduced those invited
and those in attendance. (Click here for
attendee list)
- The Watershed
Planning Approach – Dean Long, LA Group. The connection between
the health of the entire watershed and Saratoga Lake was stressed, along
with an explanation as to why SLPID needs help with this project and
the benefit of this project to watershed residents.
- Public Outreach
Component – Jennifer Brady-Connor, Saratoga Land Trust Alliance.
A newsletter, Land to Lake Perspectives, will be printed three
more times over the next year and presentations to local planning boards
will be made about the project. A web page is also available at www.sara-lake.org.
- Special Demonstration
Projects – Dean Long, LA Group. This summer, SONAR treatment (final
treatment June 1, 2000) and Weevil introduction will be used along with
the harvesting of weeds on Saratoga Lake in order to help control the
aquatic vegetation. The demonstration area is located in Mannings Cove
and will be marked for boaters.
