Saratoga Lake Watershed Management Project Development

The Saratoga Lake Protection and Improvement District (SLPID) has received a grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency Region 2 to prepare a Saratoga Lake/Watershed Protection Plan. This effort includes the updating of the 1983 Saratoga Lake Diagnostic Feasibility Study and Management Plan. The Saratoga Lake Watershed Protection project focuses on working with the local governments located within the 240 square mile watershed area to implement trategies designed to improve and protect the water resources of this important area.

Since 1983, much has changed in the concept of watershed and lake management. In recent years, Saratoga County has experienced significant changes in land use and development patterns. SLPID has worked extensively on managing problems in the lake itself and examining watershed issues as they arise. In-lake management has focused on the control of invasive Eurasian water milfoil as recommended in the 1983 Management Plan. Aquatic vegetation control technologies, however, have changed dramatically since 1983.

The current Saratoga Lake/Watershed Management planning initiative examines the feasibility of utilizing these new technologies in Saratoga Lake. The plan also makes recommendations regarding specific guidelines for land use and development practices within the watershed that will aid in the protection of the lake's water quality.

Saratoga Lake has been examined in the past as part of state and federal government regional studies. These studies will provide useful information for this project and aid in the evaluation of feasible remedial measures. The first substantive examination was made in 1932 as part of the New York State Biological Survey followed by studies sponsored by EPA during 1972-1974 and the 1982-1983 EPA Diagnostic Feasibility Study. These studies are especially useful in that they span both pre and post implementation periods of a county-wide sewage treatment system that now services and diverts sewage from major portions of the Saratoga Lake watershed area (1977) as well as 1200 lakeside dwellings (1982-1983) outside of the watershed area.
